Overview

Sarnath is one of the four most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. It is here that Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting in motion the wheel of Dharma. The site contains numerous stupas, monasteries, and archaeological remains.

History

Sarnath was an important center of Buddhism from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE. The site was rediscovered in the 19th century by British archaeologists. The famous Dhamek Stupa marks the spot where Buddha gave his first sermon.

Significance

Sarnath is where Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, laying the foundation of Buddhism. It is considered one of the most sacred places for Buddhists worldwide.
